-The election of 1856 led to the Civil War because the Republican candidate, John C. Fremont, condemned the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and also crusaded against the Slave Power/expansion of slavery; however, James Buchanan (Democrat) warned that the Republicans were extremists whose victory would lead to the Civil War.
