In 66 CE the Jewish population rebelled against the Roman Empire. Four years later, on 4 August 70 CE (Tisha B'Av - 9th Day of Av) or 30 August 70 CE, Romanlegions under Titus retook and destroyed much of Jerusalem and the Second Temple. A pagan Roman temple was set up on the former site of Herod's Temple.
