9 июн 1989 г. - The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro

Описание:

I am such a fan of Ishiguro. I mean the man just writes good books, what can I say? I am so passionate about it. Anyways, The Remains focuses on the life of its narrator, Stevens, who is the head butler of a house I forgot the name of. The entire novel focuses around his diary and personal thoughts as he is on a "motoring trip" to visit some old acquaintance. Throughout the trip he thinks of what "dignity" really means--as he has always endeavored to be dignified. He thinks of what makes him such a good butler and what it means to be such a thing. He thinks about--in a very vague way I believe--class structure in Britain and social constraints that have prevented him from going after a woman he has fancied for years. His internal thoughts and desires represent what life was life for someone of his class at the time he is narrating and recalling. His thoughts reflect the society he was living in as well as what was expected of him, etc, etc. It's basically like "here's what it was like living as a servant in Britain at the beginning of WWII.

also, it was made into a film with Anthony Hopkins as Stevens and was nominated for a butt ton of Academy Awards (if that even means anything anymore).
