After winning a costly victory in North Carolina, Lord Cornwallis joined other British forces at a base in Yorktown. A few months later, George Washington ordered Marquis de Lafayette and an American army to block Cornwallis' escape and gathered his army as well as a French force under Count de Rochambeau General Cornwallis to put Yorktown under siege. Cornwallis finally surrendered after three weeks of continuous bombardments.
