Modern take: While Smith's capture likely happened, Opechancanough's supposed anti-immigrant behavior is questionable. Yes, the Native and his company did kill Smith's men, but the question raises: Why exactly didn't they kill Smith then and there?

17th century perspective: This was just another case of inherent Native savagery, and perhaps Smith was simply being claimed as a trophy, or taken to be executed in a special manner for being leader of the white men. (P. Harvey)
