Modern Perspective: On the surface, one would assume Wingfield was deposed because he was an inept leader.

17th century perspective: The colonists knew their President to hog a majority of the supplies for his own use. In addition, the colonists were undergoing much suffering from hunger, thirst, and illness while Wingfield had it made, "neither felt want nor sickness", as the text calls it.
