She has a double degree in physics and chemistry as well as earning a PhD in physics in 1992. After university, she started being internationally recognised for her studies, and was awarded a Queen Elizabeth ll fellowship which allows established researchers to take their research to Australia for national or international significance in 1999. She has since then moved to Sydney, and she is now an Australian citizen. She started working at the University of New South Wales. She has since then made a research group dedicated to making atomic level devices using atomic scanning tunneling. Her group is the only group in the world that can make these atomically precise devices. She has written more then 360 scientific journals. She is married to Thomas Barlow, and has 2 children. In 2012 she was awarded NSW Australian scientist of the year, and in 2015 was awarded the Thomas Ranken Lyle Medal and the Eureka Prize for Leadership in Science. She was awarded Australian of the year 2018 for her work on quantum computing.
