Dr. Alec Jeffreys discovered that there are repetitive patterns of DNA, known as Variable Number of Tandem Repeats, that are present in all human beings but they differ in lengths in each human being. He then realized that this new discovery could be used to identify a person. He named this new realization genetic fingerprinting. His new technique has been used in the field of forensics. This discovery would benefit society because it will allow detectives to exactly prosecute a person based on the DNA evidence they left behind and it will limit the amount of suspects in a crime.
