On the day of December 1, 1804 Napoleon crowns himself emperor of France. He improved the central government and instituted many reforms. Napoleon regulated the economy, promoted a system of public schools for boys, made peace with the Catholic Church in the Concordat of 1801, and instituted the Napoleonic Code.
