The Hungarians' first attempt at self-rule was crushed by the Hapsburgs with the help of Russia. After the Austrian defeat by Prussia, the Hungarians pressured the Hapsburgs for a compromise. This compromise was the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary, unfortunately this compromise didn't make everyone happy.
