Dred Scott was taken by his owner to the free states of Illinois and Wisconsin, and when they returned to Missouri, he believed that he was free based on Missouri law saying “If a slave spends any time in a free state, they are forever free.” He sued for his freedom and the Supreme Court said that slaves could never be citizens.
