The Haitian Revolution began in Haiti in 1791. The revolution in France created divisions between rich and poor whites in the colony and inspired Haitian slaves to rebel, forcing France to abolish slavery in Haiti and give limited rights to free blacks. General Toussaint L'Ouverture then became the leader of the Haitian revolution, freeing Haiti from foreign influences and declaring Haiti a sovereign state. The Haitian Revolution was the first independence movement in the Caribbean and would play a role in the independence movements of nearby countries, such as the independence movement in the Dominican Republic.
