The battle of Honey springs occurred after the fall of Vicksburg and the battle at Gettysburg. These two events spilt the Confederacy in two, but far away from the regular battles in Muskogee County and McIntosh County another battle was about to take place.

Due to the lack of manpower in the west the five civilised tribes had allied with the Confederate side. The Union did not only want their land back, but also wanted to force a breakthrough into Arkansas. The battle started with artillery fire from both side but quickly escalated into hand to hand combat.

Both sides regrouped and the Union commander Blunt ordered his troops to capture the confederate artillery. The Confederates thought the Union soldiers were retreating and prepared to chase them down.

The Union soldiers took the moving Confederates under fire resulting into a Confederate loss and retreat.

Because of this victory the Union troops could march into the Confederate west, some therefore call this battle the Gettysburg of the Trans-Mississippi.
