The battle of Olustee is known as the largest battle fought in Florida during the American civil war. Confederate forced were led by Finegan, the Union troops were serving under Seymour.

The battle of Olustee was the climax of the Union invasion of Florida. Seymour's troops were ordered to take over Jacksonville. If 10% of Florida's voting population had taken a loyalty oath, Lincoln could receive votes from Florida and be reelected. Success in Florida was important for Lincolns reelection strategy.

In order to gain more control, Seymour moved west of Jacksonville to Lake City to destroy an important railroad bridge and secure northern Florida. Finegan had positioned his man near the Olustee railroad station and this is where the two sides battled.

Both sides had approximately 5000 troops however, the Confederates had the tactile advantage and managed to fight off the Union troops thus securing Florida. Nonetheless Lincoln will be elected for a second term. But the victory could be seen as a moral boost
