The Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, led his forces to destroy and massacre the city of Rome in 1527. His victory over the League of Cognac, an alliance between France, Pope Clement VII, the Kingdom of England, Republic of Florence, the Republic of Venice and the Duchy of Milan, established the dominance of the Holy Roman Empire over Italy. The Sack of Rome destroyed Rome's economy and political structure and increased the power of the Holy Roman Empire and was even considered the end of the Renaissance era in Italy, which is why it fits in the SP theme.
