Fought in the wilderness of Virginia, Confederate general Robert E. Lee found an army twice the size of his behind him. Unnerved, Lee split his army in half and flanked Union General Joseph Hooker, winning the battle.

This is widely considered the greatest Confederate victory in the Civil War.

One of Robert E. Lee's generals, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, was accidentally shot by their own soldiers, and later died.
