Before the war broke out, Christian Igbos were being massacred by the Muslim Hausas. As a result, the Christian Igbos fled and formed the Republic of Biafra in order to protect themselves. However, after failed diplomatic efforts, Nigeria and Biafra began fighting in 1967. Due to Nigeria's military superiority, the Republic of Biafra was forced to surrounder in 1970.
