Copernicus was a Polish scientist in the 1500's. He abandoned the largely accepted geocentric theory that the planets moved around the Earth and he advocated the heliocentric theory, which stated that the center of the universe was near the sun. he popularized theories that were contrasting the the popular platonic conceptions. His discoveries and avocations allowed Kepler to perfect his model with elliptical orbits, allowing a clearer understanding of teh universe.
