In 333 BC, Alexander rode through the city of Gordium where he was shown the chariot of their ancient leader, tied to a pole by a intricate knot. Legend says whoever could untie the knot would be the future ruler of Asia. Boldly, Alexander took his sword and slashed the knot, successfully untying it. The phrase "The Cutting of the Gordian Knot" is now used to describe a bold solution to a complicated problem.
