Joseph Smith decided, after his total military embarrassment, to found a bank in which he encouraged his followers to invest. Within the month, it failed. With debt collectors and the Missouri Attorney General’s office breathing down the back of his neck, Smith decided that it was time to move again, this time to Illinois.
