Date: April 20th, 1792
- France’s governing body (legislative assembly) declared war on Austria, anticipating attack
- Sought to unite France/ spread ideas of Revolution around Europe
- Prussia and Austria responded with coordinated attacks but were turned back at the Battle at Valmy
Revolutionaries wanted war because they thought war would unify the country, and had a genuine desire to spread the ideas of the Revolution to all of Europe. On April 20, 1792, the Legislative Assembly (France’s governing body, formed in 1791) declared war on Austria.

August 10, 1792
- 20000 men and women invaded the French royal family’s palace after being warned not to by the Prussians and killed the royal guards, and imprisoned Louis, Marie Antoinette, and the children
- On into early September mobs went and killed 1000 prisoners: nobles, priests, and royalist sympathisers all were killed by these mobs as well

- Bastille is a symbol of oppression, broke it down stone by stone
