13 июн 1982 г. - Board of Education of Hendrick Hudson Central School District v Rowley

Описание:

This case was brought to the Supreme Court when the parents of Amy Rowley, a student with hearing loss, sued the school district for not providing Amy with a sign language interpreter (Crane, 2015). The school justified their decision by showing that Amy was able to succeed in school without an interpreter. Amy’s parents claimed that not providing an interpreter was a violation of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. The Supreme Court ruled against Rowley saying that the school was not obligated to provide a sign language interpreter if the student was otherwise receiving personalized instruction and successful education (Crane, 2015). The case set a precedent for allowing school administrators to determine what constitutes an “appropriate” education for individuals with disabilities.
