In 1975 Garrett Brown introduced the Steadicam. The Steadicam was a combination of steady footage of a conventional tripod mount, the fluid motion of the dolly shot and the flexibility of hand-held camera work. The Steadicam works by attaching to the operator and following them. Its name comes from the fact it can keep the frames steady and not all over the place.

A prototype was completed and shown in 1975 and Brown shot a ten-minute demo reel that showed off what this device could do. Numerous directors, including Stanley Kubrick and John G. Avildsen saw this prototype demonstrated and the Steadicam was subsequently licensed to and manufactured by Cinema Products Corporation. The Steadicam was first used in the film 'Bound for Glory' in 1976. The Steadicam was also used in a running scene in Marathon Man, also in 1976.

I think the Steadicam was important to the development of TV and film as it was continuously developed into modern cameras. It also demonstrated a new way to film and added a new element to films.
