The Boer republic of Upingtonia was allowed to exist as a buffer state between the Portuguese and the British and was effectively a British Client state during their independence. However, with rising colonial populations and tensions over the state a permanent solution was needed.

In January of 1904, delegates from the two countries [as well as a single representative from Upingtonia] met in Lisbon to discuss the future of the republic. After months of negotiations, the 1904 Treaty of Lisbon was signed, which placed Upingtonia as a British Vassal state. In exchange, the border of Portuguese West Africa was extended to the Kabompo and Zambezi Rivers.
