o Found in soil
o Involvement of animal products
• Symptoms/Transmission:
o Cutaneous, Inhalation, Gastrointestinal, Injection
o working with infected animals or animal products (eg wool, hides, hair)
o spores can be inhaled via industrial areas of above animal products, or working with animal products.
• Treatment:
o Antibiotics, including intravenous
o There is a vaccine

o 1752: first clinical description of anthrax
o 1875: Koch introduced the bacteria
o 1877: Koch’s Postulate, bacillus anthracis was used
o 1881: Pasteur develops first anthrax vaccine for animals
o 1944: penicillin used to treat anthrax
o 1979: Outbreak in USSR
