As Saroo entered highschool (at a much later date), he met and saw more people of foreign and non-Australian descent, such as Greeks, Chinese, and other Indians. To say the least, he enjoyed a normal Australian life.
Soon though, Saroo's adoptive parents took notice of his struggling marks. They pressure him to put more time into academics and get into a university, or he'll be sent to a military school. As he says later on, "...I'd been given a life I couldn't have imagined (in India), and I certainly enjoyed it, but I wasn't making the most of it". He also mentions being grateful that his parents never made him feel in debt for adopting him.
Saroo does manage to get better marks in school-even rising to the tops of classes-gets into accounting at TAFE (taking part in multiple colleges after that), and taking a job in hospitality, and later getting into hospitality management.
Sooner or later, he found his mind turning back to his time in India, all those years ago.
