In 1812, Napoleon made the daring decision to invade the Russian Federation. He took this decision because Britain, their normal enemy, was occupied with the War of 1812 with the United States. Napoleon's grand army of 600,000 people marched to the capital of Russia, only to find that Tsar Alexander had burned the city down. The army waited for a little bit in the hopes that Alexander would come and surrender. When this did not happen, they had to turn back and the cold, harsh Russian winter took a massive toll on them. It was at this time that they got ambushed by the Russian army. Napoleon suffered heavy losses and defeat.
