During World War II, the Battle of Normandy resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. It was codenamed Operation Overlord, and 156,000 American, British, and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along the coast of France’s Normandy region. It was one of the largest amphibious military assaults. It’s been called the beginning of the end of the war. There was a deception operation made to trick Germans into thinking the target was Pas-de-Calais instead of Normandy. They used many tactics to fake this, including fake equipment and a fake army, and fraudulent radio transmissions. The original day chosen was June 5th, but bad weather on the days leading up caused for a delay. The invasions began at 6:30 a.m. Hitler thought that the invasion was designed to distract the Germans from a different attack and refused to release nearby divisions for a counterattack. He hesitated in calling in armored divisions as well.
