Renowned as a less hardline Communist leader, Mikhail Gorbachev is appointed into power, as its last general secretary of the Soviet Union. Here he would relax hardline Communist values, in hopes for the revitalisation of a dwindling Soviet economy. Whilst successful in doing so, his transformation of the Soviet Union into a modern social democracy, in turn caused the collapse of their stronghold on Eastern Europe.
