After six years of World War 2, the Germans were finally defeated in 1945. Adolf Hitler committed suicide on April 30, in his bunker under the Reich Chancery to make sure he won’t fall into his enemies’ hands alive and to flee from responsiblity.
One week after Hitler’s death the war was over. On May 7, Germany surrendered unconditionally and one day later on May 8, at 11:01 pm, the cessation of all acts of war was made official. In some countries as France or the Czech Republic the VE-day is even considered a public holiday. In the United Kingdom more than one million people celebrated the event to signify the end of the war in Europe. But not only in Europe this day was celebrated; all over the world people were delighted about the end of the war. Some countries in Eastern Europe consider May 9 the official VE-day, since it was already past midnight in Moscow and some other countries when the official document of the end of the war was published.
All in all, the VE-day is an incisive event which was the beginning of a new age.
