The Flight to Varennes was King Louis XIV's unsuccessful attempt to escape from Paris in order to initiate a counter-revolution in Montmedy, but unfortunately had only reached as far as Varennes, where they were recognized at their last stop in Sainte-Menehould. This was the last straw for the revolutionaries, as their own King was plotting against them, and it was agreed that he had to die as a result.
