While most of the islands in the Aegean Sea were granted to Greece by the Great Powers, the United Kingdom wished to increase it's influence in the region. While Malta, Cyprus, and the Ionian Isles did great in the effort of establishing British dominance in the Eastern Mediterranean; it could never be cemented.

As a result, the British issued a protectorate over the Free State of Icaria during the conflict. After the war, they demanded that the Principality of Samos also be released, under British protection as well.

These two states would remain British protectorates until April 1914, when the Free State of Icaria was transferred under the authority of Samos.
