This was the year Mexico won its independence from Spain. After a liberal group was put in power in Spain, many wealthy creoles, who were people of Spanish descent born in the Americas, were afraid of losing their privileges in Mexico and rebelled against Spain. Creole officer Agustin de Iturbide declared independence in 1821.
