The Migration Legislation Amendment Act is introduced to deter and intimidate 'illegal entrants' following the influx of immigrants after the Tiananmen Square massacre. New regulations included mandatory deportation as well recovery of funds from asylum seekers to pay for costs of detention and deportation.
