While the idea of hiring the Chinese was being played out, the inauguration of the railroad was long and treacherous. The Chinese workers were easy to employ since there were so many, would work for much less, and would work on the more dangerous parts of the railroad. During the construction of the railroad the Chinese workers were paid twenty eight dollars a month and the pay slowly increased as more of the railroad was finished.
