Helmed by Sony the first DVDs and players hit stores.

DVDs boasted a higher resolution and were more durable than VHS. DVDs also allowed for more content to be stored on the disc and for menu navigation so that users can watch more content than just the film such as gag reels, director commentary, and other behind the scenes bits.

The extra content on DVD's also made film more accessable for some users as you could select the language so non-English speaking people could enjoy the film or the other way round. DVDs also allow viewers to have subtitles so hard of hearing users could enjoy the film.
