In 1856 he ran for president as the first candidate of the Republicans, but lost to the Democrat James Buchanan. Fremont ran on a platform that opposed to slavery and extension of slavery into territories. The popular vote went to Buchanan who received 1,836,072 votes to 1,342,345 votes received by Fremont.
