The Boston Patriots egged British soldiers on, knowing that the British could not fire on them. They mocked them, and called them “lobsterbacks.” Knowing that the British could not fire on them, the Patriots were much braver when it came to attacking the British, verbally or physically. The Boston Massacre was caused by a large mob of people throwing ice, snowballs, and rocks at the Boston Customs House. As the mob pressed onward, attacking British soldiers as they went, the British had no choice but to open fire. Crispus Attucks was the first to die, getting shot by two bullets. The mob was aghast and promised the soldiers that they would have them tried for murder. Samuel Adams titled this event “The Boston Massacre,” hoping to dampen the British’s reputation and further his cause.
