On this date, the first feature-length movie to be made in India was released. It was called 'Raja Harishchandra' and was directed by Dadasaheb Phalke.

When we think of film history and the impact different milestones in film has had on our society, Bollywood is not what instantly comes to mind, even though 1.4 billion of the world's population lives and consumes media in India, People tend to not be able to grasp the full extent to how huge and influential the Bollywood industry is like in Asia. Many people describe the obsession and following as similar, if not bigger, than religion in many people's lives in India. It has an extremely loud space in Indian culture, politically and socially.

With the very little freedom and accessibility to other parts of the world at this time and in some cases currently, movies have not just been a source of entertainment but has a very strong social impact on Indian society and how it works. One of the biggest demographics Bollywood impacts, is women in India, from their fashion sense to what products they buy, Bollywood is also the most consumed advertising outlets in Asia, through its use of beauty products and clothing lines in the movies, one of the most popular trends in India is having entire weddings, from the attire to how their soon to be husband acts, as similar to characters in their favourite movies. It is also India's largest music industry, the soundtracks used in Bollywood films is the mainstream pop music, right now one of the biggest Bollywood music platforms on youtube 'T-series' is about to pass as the most subscribed channel in the world with 63 million people subscribed and going up.

Woman in India are quite a large underrepresented group in the workforce and through the power of Indian cinema and the way women were often portrayed as being very fulfilled and successful with their lives, a study was done in 2015 that showed the more woman who had been exposed to Bollywood culture than those who weren't, had significantly higher job-seeking behaviour, therefore, higher employment rates, as well as describing themselves as generally more 'happy and fulfilled.' This is just one of the ways Bollywood entertainment impacts the lives of Indian society. The characters and plots of these movies are taken very seriously and the morals and ethics of the characters' journeys are followed and almost worshipped in Indian culture.

One of the most influential Bollywood films on India was 'Rang De Basanti' in 2006 which exposed and spoke on the nation's corrupt politics and politicians, which gave a very loud voice to a lot of young activists. Many other films in Bollywood are using this huge and influential platform to address political truths that wouldn't be shown in their mainstream media. Bollywood, in India, is a voice of entertainment that directly resonates and is trusted by their society, that has such an immense impact.

Today Bollywood has out passed Hollywood in ticket sales for movies by more than a billion. Many studios in Hollywood are only recently just seeing the pot of gold that Bollywood and its viewers can have on film, and many actors and directors are working either side of the industry to try share and profit off this pocket of culture that really has and continues to change such a huge amount of peoples life.
