Charles v attempted to halt spread of religious division by conferencing; lutherans declared statement of faith (Augsburg confession), which charles refused to accept and demanded they return to catholic church

This backfired big time- protestant territories made a military alliance against him, which he was unable to retaliate against considering the other issues he was caught up in (habsburg-valois wars, ottoman turks taking over hungary/vienna, etc)
