"The first autobiography written by escaped slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass is published and becomes one of the most important books of the 19th century. Douglass is ambivalent about the Underground Railroad:

'I have never approved of the very public manner in which some of our western friends have conducted what they call the Underground Railroad, but which I think, by their open declarations, has been made most emphatically the upperground railroad.'"

It doesn't see like Frederick Douglass is "ambivalent," at all, but sharply critical of white allyship.
