Duke William II of Normandy (aka William the Conqueror leads an army of Norman, Breton, Flemish, and French in the invasion and eventual occupation of England. Decisive Norman victory at the Battle of Hasting during which Harold Godwinson (aka Harold II), the last Anglo-Saxon King, is killed. Legend based on the Bayeux Tapestry has him killed with an arrow to the eye. This date generally marks the transition from Old English to Middle English.
