Due to the invention of certain experiments with gases that only became possible at the turn of the 19th century, John Dalton was able to propose a modern atomic theory in 1803. His theory is based on the assumptions that matter is made up of atoms that are indivisible and indestructible and that all atoms of an element are identical.
