Pope Paul III made 'Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition' aka Holy Office | a committee of six cardinals w/ judicial authority over all catholics _ power to arrest, imprison, and execute suspected heretics | published the 'index of prohibited books' which included christian humanist writings (e.g. erasmus) and protestant books --> EFFECT: destroyed heresy in papal states, but had little influence outside of them
