The California Republic established in the Treaty of Treaty of Ciudad de México was from its birth a poor nation. While the Gold rush was much larger in the north, there was a smaller amount in California that allowed the nation to sustain itself until the gold rush ended in 1855.

As the nation fell further into debt, with many settlers returning to North Mexico and the United States. In North Mexico however, the silver mines were booming; leading to the Baja California Purchase.

In 1863, the California Republic sold the Baja California Territory south of the 28th parallel north to North Mexico, where it was organized as the Cortés Territory.
