While this act was created to be able to support British troops in America, this act created tension between the colonies and the British. Benjamin Franklin tried to solve this tension by saying "If you chuse to tax us, give us Members in your Legislature, and let us be one People.", but William Pitt declined. Ultimately this provoked a constitutional confrontation. Some colonies boycotted British Goods, while some petitioned for the repeal, but some were more violent. A group called, the Sons of Liberty burned an effigy of collector Andrew Oliver and destroyed his warehouse. While they were not alone, with the encourgment of John Hancock and John Adams, almost three thousand New Yorkers marched through the streets while yelling "Liberty!".
