1 янв 1800 г. - William Nicholson and Anthony Carlisle decomposed water into hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis with a voltaic pile. Johann Wilhelm Ritter duplicated the experiment with a rearranged set of electrodes to collect the two gases separately.
