Robert Millikan discovered the charge of electrons using oil drop experiments. Using the data gathered from the applied electric force compared with how the oil drops changed direction, Millikan was able to determine the charge of each drop of oil. Therefore, he discovered that every drop had charges that were multiples of one number, which was the charge of the electron. Millikan also contributed the photoelectric effect, which describes the electrically charged released when when a substance is exposed to electromagnetic radiation (officially discovered by Einstein).
