This large massacre of the Huguenots occurred in August 1572 at a time when the Catholic and Calvinist parties had been reconciled through the marriage of the sister of the reigning Valois King, Charles IX , and Henry of Navarre, the Bordon ruler of Navarre. Henry, the son of Jeanne d'Albert, queen of Navarre. Jeanne d' Albert was responsible for introducing Calvinist ideas just like Henry had been acknowledged for being the leader of the Huguenot party. The Guise family decided to persuaded the king and his mother, Catherine de' Medici, because this large gathering of Calvinists posed a large threat to them. Charles attempted to eliminate the Huguenots in one swift blow. The massacre began early in the day on August 24 when the king's guards sought and killed prominent Huguenot leaders. The murders began a large wave of violence that gripped the city of Paris. For three days, frenzied Catholic mobs roamed the city of Paris, killing Huguenots. During these three days, 3,000 Huguenots were pronounced dead. Henry of Navarre was able to save his life by promising to become a Catholic.
