At the age of 17, Donatello becomes an apprentice to a blacksmith and sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti. This apprenticeship lasted from approximately 1403 to 1407. Ghiberti's Gothic style had a great impact on Donatello's style which is seen in his later works. While apprenticing under him, he worked on the bronze doors of the baptistery. He also assisted in the making of the doors for the cathedral.
